devlug.de is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.

This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.

Mastodon 🚀

I’m working on my master’s thesis at the University of Vienna, and I’d love your input! My research focuses on sustaining long-term user activity on Mastodon, contributing to a more active Fediverse. If you have a few minutes, please take my short survey:

Wow, metalhead.club server traffic really has decreased over the recent 5 months.

Whereas we had about 9.5 TB traffic in summer (and even more at the beginning of the year), metalhead.club now consumes about 7 TB these days.

Seems like the Federation is slowing down.

What do other admins think about it? Do you see the same trend?

Figure shows traffic of metalhead.club over the recent months. Traffic volume is declining.

Ich bin nicht sicher, ob hier gerade jene Leute herumlaufen, die man nach den Gründen fragen will, aber vielleicht habt ihr ja trotzdem etwas zu sagen :)

Maybe a bit late but I tried to upgrade Mastodon from 4.3.0 to 4.3.2 but the version number still shows v4.3.0 - some time ago I read someone had the same problem but I can't find it anymore.

Does anyone have a tip for me?

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.66 here:

          https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/27028/

2 out of 3 of GitHub Actions Continuous Integration checks have passed (and the third is running and hopefully will as well).

As in the past, I don't have commit access, so it's up to someone else to merge it.

Thank you for the continued improvements and bug fixes!

@i first, I regret it and it was a mistake. I should have kept instead of (and I wrote it already several times). If you run a single user instance - don’t use Mastodon. I was one of the early adaptors of snac and also contributed to the project but back in that time, the API was very limited and several clients didn’t work or were limited in display posts (as in a kind of count). The current releases are much better and work great - especially for single user instances and @grunfink is doing an absolutely great job (thank you very much for your work!).

I’m planning to switch back to snac (it finally can do “move” actions where you’re not locked-in anymore) but switching the instance on the same domain means a three-way movement to not break the users crypto keys. There’s also a self destroy possibility, but that mostly only works on Mastodon. Snac cannot interprete this (but according to grunfink the keys are resourced in a few days, so it shouldn’t be a problem) but not quite sure about other solutions like GTS etc. So, the smoothest way is to migrate to a tmp instance on another domain and the create an instance on this domain and move back again. If I have time, I’ll do so.

I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' snac to 2.65 here:

                  https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/26783

GitHub Actions Continuous Integration checks are currently running (two are queued. Hopefully those will go smoothly, but I know at least one of them in particular seems to take an awfully long time recently).

Thanks again to you and other snac contributors for continuing to improve what continues to be my favorite ActivityPub implementation!

Oh, also since this PR was merged: https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/26633 It appears as if snac is now building correctly on older versions of OS X that were throwing up errors in under "Port Health" from https://ports.macports.org/port/snac/details/ I do have older Mac systems, but wasn't testing on much older OS versions, so I kind of turned a blind eye to the errors that IIRC were showing up on OS X High Sierra back through Lion? Those seem to be working now too! (Though again, I haven't tested such systems personally and won't dig through my storage unit to exhume old hardware of mine to do so for the foreseeable short term future).

Yes I'm using over a typical setup and I love it. It's so lightweight and easy to manage. I mainly use it in a browser but it plays well with the Android app Tusky too. I'd recommend you play with it first though just to be sure you like it as it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I currently regret most switching from to — fortunately, Snac now supports account migrations, so I’ll be able to switch back soon but it requires migrating me to migrate to another domain, where I then can switch back to this one on snac.

GitHub Actions Continuous Integration checks are progressing (3 out of 4 passed, which is a good sign; I guess MacPorts recently started checking 4 OS versions on GitHub automatically instead of 3 so this is taking a bit longer than I am accustomed to, it seems as if the macos-15 checks in particular are sluggish, maybe that system is overloaded?).

I have to say that considering I've been running my instance for a week or two, It is very light weight. The jail in total is only 629M. I'm actually really impressed and yes some will say that I don't have all of the features of that is true. But I have all the features that I require and it is easily administered, Upgraded and extremely low on resources. 😍

So I've been running my own instance for the past week and I have to say that I'm actually loving it. It hardly takes up any resources and the inbuilt web interface is easily configurable with nothing more than .
There are some things that folk used to running might not like. For example it does not show any follower or following numbers to any instances. So people using Mastodon will see 0 followers and 0 following even though those Snac uses may have 100's of followers .
You do get a people tab on the snac interface that is just a list divided into people following you and people you follow but no numbers. This is an intentional design feature by the author @grunfink@comam.es who stated.
I haven't implemented a simple count of following / followers on purpose; I consider all metrics in network media inherently toxic, because it's a way of comparing the relative success of people. This is also why, as seen from other Fediverse implementations, snac accounts always report 0 / 0 connections.
Also not all features work with android / iOS apps but most of the essentials do. I occasionally use when I'm not just using the web interface for Snac which I just find easier. I think I will be staying with this fantastic lightweight piece of software and look forward to see what new features get added in the future. A wish would be to have a way of importing followers from Mastodon to Snac, which I think the dev is working on at the moment. Oh and I nearly forgot to say that you can import the CSV file of people that you are following through the command line and it's fairly simple to do too. I'd 100% recommended giving Snac a try if you're looking for a no nonsene lightweight instance.
