@pidgin is actively developed. Historically, #XMPP support has always been subpar though. It may change with the next release :)

I also recommend @gajim or @dino to enjoy modern chat features on desktop. And for other protocols than XMPP you can set up https://slidge.im (yes, shameless self-plug)

• Also #Distributions neglecting #Updates is a general problem and why @torproject warns from installing #Debian's #Tor package.

Sadly there's no #deb package for #TorBrowser / #Tor by #TorProject which makes it really inconvenient to distribute beyond "shove it into $HOME/.apps/TorBrowser/ and pray it doesn't break!"

I'm having ideas faster than I can implement them so I'm gonna throw this one out here. Maybe I'll accidentally nerdsnipe someone else :)

XMPP to APRS-IS messaging gateway

This would let you use your standard IM client (Gajim, Conversations, et al) to send and receive APRS messages. I imagine it would be relatively straightforward to implement using something like https://slidge.im/ doing some basic format translations. Future advanced features could include using the APRS station comment as the presence message for the XMPP contact.
