devlug.de is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
🎉 Happy to announce that my talk "A Universal and Stable API to Everything: XMPP" at FOSDEM has been accepted! 🎉
I'll explore a new way of seeing XMPP and how it can achieve things quickly and simply when used as a coding interface. I’ll also discuss the work of the XMPP Standards Foundation and why having many XEPs isn’t a bad thing.
📍 See you at FOSDEM 1 & 2 February 2025 at Real-Time Lounge.
Talk time slot and details at https://fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-5721-a-universal-and-stable-api-to-everything-xmpp/
Another #Jabber / #XMPP channel I'm deeply involved with is the #OpenStreetMap channel. It started off with ~5 people and has now grown to ~90!
If you're interested in using or editing #OSM in any capacity, please join us.

@nextcloud
I really like Nextcloud to keep my files, calendars and contacts in sync but for chatting I prefer #xmpp.
It is pretty cool that #Conversations_im sales have been paying my rent for the last 10 years.
Not everything needs to be a subscription.
pimux.de XMPP server will be offline on December 10 starting at 8PM UTC for up to two hours due to server migration.
Last time we raised funds to add offline messaging support to #bifrost bridge, which connects #matrix and #xmpp. Now we need to raise some funds again to adapt the bridge to support recent changes in how media is shared in matrix. Please contribute https://opencollective.com/bifrost-media #FreeSoftware Once we have some funds, we hope this will motivate someone to fix the bridge. You can also join xmpp:bifrost-mam@groups.poddery.com?join if you like to help.
The #Fediverse may end up suffering from what #XMPP is going through.
Better-funded (but enshittification-prone) platforms (like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Discord, #Matrix, and #Bluesky) can swoop in, provide better marketing and faster development. A critical mass of people moves there.
Suddenly, you're socially pressured into using them. They become a necessity to find work, to organize communities, to buy and sell stuff, to apply for government programs...hell, to even book Metro tickets.

The solution is the same as ever -
1. Onboard people to free platforms like #XMPP and the #Fediverse
2. Increase the value you create (e.g. posts, replies, interactions, etc) on free platforms, and decrease it on abusive platforms.
3. Get others to do the same.

Over a year ago, I wrote ”A month using XMPP (using Snikket) for every call and chat”.
For something like 15 months now, Sandra and I have used XMPP via @snikket_im for probably 99.9% of our calls, messages, and video chats, running on an Intel NUC.
We both use the Snikket mobile app, and I also use @dino and @profanity in Linux.
Perhaps a fun holiday / weekend project, if you want family-friendly, self-hosted, #E2EE communications?

"It is important to be able to communicate freely", says Jérôme Poisson aka @Goffi in the NGI0 #podcast. He is the main developer of Libervia, a communication ecosystem based on #XMPP.
XMPP is mostly known for chat but Libervia offers many more features such as blogs, fora, events & file sharing. It has gateways to other open protocols like #ActivityPub & email. He talks about Libervia, the political side of technology & offers advise about #NGI0 grants.

@praveen @xmpper @debacle I never hear about "pen drive" or "data cable", always "USB key" or "USB cable", I guess it's region specific.
Anyway, my point is that XMPP should not be used as main name for end-users, it should be a logo on a website to indicate that this app is compatible with the existing ecosystem.
"XMPP Client" doesn't tell enough anyway, you can have an XMPP client which doesn't do IM at all.
I'm proposing we start using #XMS (eXtensible Messaging System) as a shorter version of #XMPP. This would be easier to remember as similar to SMS/MMS. What do you think about it?

Another #Jabber / #XMPP channel I made is called "Wanderer's Inn".
It's the channel for all #travel talk, including stories, photos, questions, and advice. We also love to discuss #bags, #hiking, #backpacking, and the #onebag life.

I’m slowing starting to think about what a 10 year anniversary update to my "The State of Mobile XMPP in 2016"¹ would look like.
It’s interesting what parts of the article are still relevant today (mostly how push works and how that impacts battery drain) while other parts are seemingly irrelevant. Yes, #XMPP works on mobile phones. Obviously. That’s how the overwhelming majority (⅔) of users uses XMPP².

From now on, you can message #anonymously on @wpn with a disposable account.
Sign up at `anon.woodpeckersnest.space` with #gajim or #dino. I only have #conversations on my phone and I don't think anon login is available there.. let me know if any other Android/iOS client works for you.
To be noted: S2S connections are denied for anon accounts, for good reason - It's not like I want my server to become a spammers' heaven.
To be noted²: I'm testing, everything might change.
I installed #Signal and #Conversations_im on a clean install of #GrapheneOS on my Pixel 4a and measured the battery impact. The results are shocking!
Both messengers had only one contact: my regular phone.
I used my regular phone to send messages to the Pixel 4a (which was not used for anything else over the course of the experiment).
I always sent the same message via Signal and #XMPP (mixing up which app went first). In total I sent ~32 messages in intervals of 10mins to a few hours.
