          Ich benutze seit 2008. Enfangs mit ejabberd, seit einiger Zeit aber mit prosody, weil man damit eher einen Transport zu zB Whatsapp hinbekommen hat.
          Ich habe seit Sommer auch und bin recht begeistert: WA, Signal, Matrix und Telegram laufen im XMPP mit.

                      While / has not the same as Signal (e.g. more meta data is stored on the server; and current  1 is not as good as, OMEMO 2, which unfortunately is not widely implemented), but it's close enough for me.

                      The advantages of and outweight those minor problems. YMMV.

                        Es gibt auch dezentrale Lösungen, ähnlich wie hier und wie man es von E-Mail kennt.

                                I never tried Signal or Whatsapp, but I'm on free and federated / since 2014. I came late to the party — Jabber exists since 1999. At some point, Google chat federated with Jabber, but they stopped it, because does bigtech things.

                                Bridges from Jabber to Whatsapp and Signal do exist, i.e. , but because WA and Signal are anti-federation, the bridge can only work, if one has an account on WA/Signal 😞

                                Anyway, all friends and family are on Jabber now.

                                  There are IM apps mostly pushed by a few loud enthusiasts on Mastodon, and then there is , which is used in the real world.

                                  For example:

                                    Unfortunately spam and abuse - like anywhere on the Internet - can be a problem in public channels on the Jabber/XMPP network.
                                    That's why the next version of is combining ban and message deletion (moderation) into one step.

                                    Let's hope you won't need that functionality very often.
