On January 4, 1999, Jabber was first announced to the public¹.

Twenty-seven years later, Jabber—or XMPP, as it became known after standardization through the #IETF—remains the only truly vendor-independent, federated instant messaging platform.

In almost three decades, XMPP has never stopped evolving and remains our best tool for digital independence.

But don't expect it in #backports. Too many new dependencies, sorry!

I use Matrix, too, via an #XMPP bridge, #slidge by @nicoco. That way, I can use my usual #Jabber clients, which I like better than the Matrix ones. I.e. #Dino by @dino and #Gajim by @gajim.

This weekend a "non-technical" friend and me installed #Debian 13 on their notebook computer, removing their previous OS. They is happy!

Historic moment, because I'm promoting #freeSoftware for three fckng decades to them. Now it's done.

Next step: Convince them of using the #Dino #Jabber client instead of unencrypted email with me. Maybe next decade?
